Client Text Backup

This page describes the 'Client Text Backup' Export function in the System module.

---

The 'Client Text Backup' Export function allows you to back up the information that is stored in Company 0. This includes the Configuration setting, Mailboxes and Conferences (and their contents), Global Users and record links. This option can be useful if you need to build a database by copying some of the Companies and data from an existing one. Use the 'Company Text Backup' function to export information from the other Companies (for example, to export the information in Company 1, log in to that Company and run the 'Company Text Backup' function).

You can be working in any Company to use the 'Client Text Backup' function. Follow these steps:

  1. Change to the System module using the [Switch Module] button in the Navigation Centre.

  2. Click the [Routines] button also in the Navigation Centre and then [Exports].

  3. Double-click the 'Client Text Backup' option in the resulting list.

  4. The 'Specify Client Text Backup' window will appear, in which you can enter an optional description of the back-up file that you are about to create. You can use up to 40 characters. This description will be saved in the back-up file and, if you later need to restore from a back-up, it will be shown in the list of importable files shown by the 'Automatic' Import function. Click the [Run] button to proceed to the next step.

  5. A 'Save File' dialogue box will open, allowing you to name the export file and specify where it should be saved. Enter the name of the file in the filename area and locate it in the appropriate folder or directory in the usual way and then press [Save]. For ease of importing later, it is recommended that you give the name of your back-up file a .txt extension. The name of the file should not begin with two leading minus signs/hyphens (e.g. --Data.txt) as it is not possible to import information from files named in this way.

The information in Company 0 will be exported and, when the export has finished, you will be brought back to the 'Exports' list. Close it using the close box.

As with the 'Company' and 'Database Text Backup' functions, files created by the 'Client Text Backup' function will be encrypted.

Please refer here for details about using a back-up file created by the 'Client Text Backup' function in a new database.
