Currencies - Text Card

This page describes the fields on the 'Text' card of the Currency record. Please follow the links below for descriptions of the other cards:

If you are using iOS or Android, tap the 'Items' tab to see the 'Text' card.

There will be occasions when you need an amount to be printed on a form in words (i.e. as a phrase) rather than figures, for example when printing a cheque. The words and rules to be used when constructing the phrase will be taken from the record in the Values in Text setting in the System module for the Language in question, while the names of the Currency will be taken from this card in the Currency record.

For example, the value ?5.40 can be written in various ways such as "five pounds forty pence", "five pounds and forty pence", "five pounds 40 pence", "five pounds 40 pence only" or "pounds five forty pence". The word order, the words "five" and "forty", the inclusion or not of the words "and" and "only" and the use of numbers or words for the Minor Currency will all be determined by the Values in Text record, while the names of the Currency ("pounds" and "pence") will be taken from this card in the Currency record.

Please refer to the description of the Values in Text setting here for full details, including a full list of the fields that you can use if you need amounts to be printed in words.

Value in Text Name
Enter here the name of the Currency as it is to be included in phrases constructed to represent amounts. The Value in Text Name field should contain the singular form of the Currency name, while the Value in Text Name (2-4) and (5-) fields should contain the plural. Two plural fields have been provided because some Languages such as Russian and Lithuanian have more than one plural form, depending on the quantity involved.

Minor Currency Name
The Minor Currency is the one hundredth part of the Currency (for example, pence, cents or öre). Enter here its name as it is to be included in phrases constructed to represent amounts. The Minor Currency Name field should contain the singular form of the name, while the Minor Currency Name (2-4) and (5-) fields should contain the plural. Two plural fields have been provided because some Languages such as Russian and Lithuanian have more than one plural form, depending on the quantity involved.

Gender
These options are used in Languages with two genders: use them to signify the genders of the Value in Text Name and the Minor Currency Name.

Card 1 of the Values in Text record contains a grid where you can enter the names of each number between one and 99. This grid has two columns, for the masculine and feminine versions of these names. The appropriate version will be used, depending on the gender that you specify here.

Matrix
Use the table in the lower part of the window if you need to enter various translations of the Value in Text and Minor Currency Names (singular and plurals). Specify a Language in the first column using 'Paste Special' if necessary, and the appropriate translations in the other column. There is no need to enter a row for your home Language.

In order for the translations to be used, there must be a record in the Values in Text setting for the Language that you specify in the first column. This will allow the translations to be included in phrases that represent amounts.
