Introduction to the Point of Sales module in Standard ERP

The Point of Sales (POS) module in Standard ERP is suitable for use in stores where the quick and easy registration of sales in high volumes is of the highest priority. Sales (recorded in the POS Invoice register) do not update stock or the Nominal Ledger in real time, making the saving of Invoices much faster. This is desirable in a retail environment where the closing of an Invoice must be followed by the opening of a new one as quickly as possible. You can update stock and the Nominal Ledger periodically (e.g. at the end of every day) using the relevant Maintenance functions. POS Invoices are included in sales statistics reports such as the Customer/Item Statistics, Item Sales Statistics, Item Statistics and Item Turnover History.

POS Invoices can be entered using desktop computers and also using suitable tills and cash machines. These can be connected to external devices such as printers, touch-screen monitors, customer displays and cash drawers The tills can be connected to the server using one of two connection methods:

  1. A "live" connection between sales terminals and the server in which sales terminals remain connected to the server throughout their work sessions (i.e. a standard client-server connection). All information is saved in the server database immediately. The steps required to prepare for a live connection are described here.

  2. A "live synchronised" connection between sales terminals and the server in which sales terminals are connected to the server when the server is available and otherwise act as stand-alone systems. When the connection exists, sales will be saved in the server database immediately and also in the databases on the sales terminals. When the connection does not exist, sales will only be recorded in the databases on the sales terminals. After a period of working offline, these sales will be uploaded to the server automatically when the connection is re-established, at times when the server's workload is low. Any relevant information that has been changed in the server database will also be sent to the sales terminals. While this connection method will result in larger databases on the sales terminals, it will be useful for companies where the network connection is slow or not reliable and where it is essential that the clients can continue working when there is no connection to the server.
