Job Costing Example

Starting on this page, we describe using an example the process of administering a Project from initial registration through to invoicing. In Standard ERP, the term "Project" is virtually interchangeable with "Job": it refers to an undertaking requiring the completion of a number of tasks. For example, a particular Project might be the installation of a multi-room entertainment system. In addition to the installation of the cabling, remote control system and speakers, tasks required by this Project might include surveying the building, ascertaining the requirements of the Customer and possibly producing a report.

Before you can start recording the details of the Project itself, you will need to enter information in a number of other registers, including the following:

Persons
Enter separate records in the Person register for each member of personnel who will carry out chargeable work. The Person register is in the System module.

Items
As well as entering Item records that represent the goods and materials that you will supply when fulfilling Projects, you should also enter Items representing each type of chargeable work (e.g. consultancy, installation, training). You should enter these as Service Items. The Item register is available in the Job Costing module.

Item Groups
If any Items fall into logical groupings, you can organise them using Item Groups. The Item Group register is available as a setting in the Job Costing module.
