Introduction to Imports in the System Module

The 'Imports' routine allows you to import information from tab-delimited text files exported by other Standard ERP databases or Companies, or from other applications such as spreadsheets. You can also use it to import the encrypted back-up files created by the 'Company Text Backup' and 'Database Text Backup' Export functions.

To import a file, ensure you are in the System module and click the [Routines] button in the Navigation Centre. Then click the [Imports] button in the subsequent window. You can also use the Ctrl-Shift-I (Windows) or ⌘-Shift-I (macOS) keyboard shortcuts. An 'Imports' list window will appear:

There are two import options in the System module: double-click one to start the import. An 'Open File' dialogue box will appear, asking you to locate the file to be imported. Click or tap [Open] and the import will begin. Ensure the name of the file does not begin with two leading minus signs/hyphens (e.g. --Data.txt) as it is not possible to import information from files named in this way.

Usually you can only import information into your Standard ERP database when you are the only user that is logged in. If you would like to be able to import information when more than one user is logged in, select the Allow Import with Multiple Users option on the 'Unsupported' card in the Optional Features setting in the System module. It will still not be possible to import information if any user is modifying a record or setting (i.e. if any user has a window open with the title 'Update'). Users will not be able to work while an import is taking place. You can use the Active Users setting in the System module to check how many users are logged in and to see if any are modifying records.
